My phone never stops ringing…

If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a million times - “you’re the 25th recruiter to call me today!!” My response varies depending on the type of person I am talking to, but always has the same message:

“I would be worried if my phone stopped ringing. “

I’ve seen the markets change, the ebbs and tides of locum tenens for the different specialties. It’s my job to know what’s going on and what’s happening before it happens. When I’m calling you, it’s because you and your peers are in high demand, not just because I like interrupting your dinner J

Right now, it’s a sellers market. There are countless opportunities for locum tenens in countless cities across the nation. But just like real estate, a sellers market can quickly turn into a buyers market. One day, you’re spread so thin that you can’t remember how to sign your own name, then one day you wake up - and just like that - it’s changed! Where is the happy medium?

The best piece of advice I can give is “get in while it’s hot”.  If you just try out a locum tenens position, you may find that you actually like it. The clients are so happy that you were able to help them that they are going to come to you again and again….even when the market changes. A perfect example of this would be a radiology client of mine in Michigan. Four years ago, they were having a hard time finding a doctor to cover a vacation. I found one for them, and they have used him at least 1 week a month since then, most times more often. Right now, the client would have no problem bringing on a full time radiologist to compliment their practice but they remember who was there when no one else was. They appreciate and respect that, and continue to book the locum tenens radiologist whenever he is available. He’s definitely found his happy medium!

My question is – why would you not take advantage of such a great market while you can?

Oh boy, just the thought of it can make the hair on the back of your neck stand up…  As a recruiter I often hear “Yes! That sounds like a great opportunity, but I don’t want to go through all of that paper work and non-sense just for that….” When I speak with a physician about a new opportunity. A big, scary, looming pile of paperwork on your doorstep to fill out and send back like it was due yesterday is probably the least appealing thing about locum tenens.

I can deal with a lot things being a deal breaker – but never paperwork.

To me, there is nothing more rewarding than when you hear back from a physician at the end of the process “Thank you for your perseverance, and job well done” – It reminds me of why I love my job.  The doctor has to take care of patients, and that’s why we take care of doctors!

Today, many more groups and hospitals who are recruiting their next physician are open to a locum to permanent option as a solution. They only want to see candidates on a locum tenens basis who would consider a permanent offer.   

We find so many great doctors who are willing to help out a facility in a bind, yet so many are too quick and say 'NO'  'I'm not in the market', not realizing they close the door of opportunity before they even get a glimpse of what's inside!   You wouldn’t say no to an offer without even knowing what it is, right? 

Don't let this type of scenario deter you from agreeing to help out!  This is the perfect scenario to keep your options wide open and see whether the grass may be greener!!

Go ahead, try it, you just might like it! Go for a week of locum tenens assignment with an open mind.   Let them fall in love with you.  If you can actually see yourself and your family in the new community, the job is what you've always wanted, the people are great, not to mention-the new state of the art, top notch equipment is amazing... why not get the offer and then decide if it's  for you and your family or not?  

 Ever go window-shopping?

You are not really thinking about anything in particular you want to purchase.  Window-shopping is great. There is no pressure to shop for anything in particular; just looking- that's it!  It's enjoyable and before you know it, you’re pleasantly surprised to find a treasure, which you wouldn’t have found if you had not gone out for the day!

Is it so bad to wiggle your toes in the water 1st, and then consider taking the full plunge?  This is one way to get your feet wet before making any decisions. 

Best-case scenario, this locum tenens to perm situation just may just land you that dream job.  The concept of "dating" is appealing, adventurous, definitely mysterious and often spontaneous.  Go for it !!!
